OCR or Optical Character Recognition is not a new technology but has improved in accuracy over recent years. There are now two kinds of OCR that we work with. There is still a need to take a scanned document and make it editable in Word or Excel. This is a full page OCR and very useful for solicitors or accountants or anybody who needs to re-create an original from a scanned copy. The other type of OCR is Searchable Text.

Batch OCR - If you are scanning documents in on a daily basis and have experienced searchable text from yoru scanning application you will have noticed that the process can be quite slow. If you try and create searchable text while scanning, the scanner will be stopped while the PC processes each file. This isn't a viable when you have to scan a large amount of documents. The solutions is a PDF server that will watch folders or run at a specific time.

IRIS PDF Server - We recommend using IRIS's PDF Server which is a great tool for OCR'ing folders or folder structures. There are a range of outputs to choose from and great control over filenames, compression and formats. For example, a folder of client files can be converted each night from TIFF to searchable pdf and each client file renamed to the first sentence in the file.
